Humanity's Team Sees a Common Thread in Nepal Floods, AI Water Strain and Job Risk

BOULDER, CO, UNITED STATES, August 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Humanity's Team, a 23-year-old global nonprofit focused on a sustainable and flourishing planet, says this week's deadly floods on the Nepal-China border, the strain AI data centers are placing on water-stressed communities, and new warnings about AI-driven job losses point to a question worth public debate: whether these separate crises share a common root.

Flash floods struck Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts and China's Gyirong region on August 26, killing hundreds of people, according to media reports, with search and rescue operations continuing and final casualty figures still being confirmed by authorities. The disaster follows a string of major climate-linked events in recent years, including the 2023 Lahaina fire in Hawai'i, the 2021 Marshall Fire near Boulder, Colorado, the January 2025 Los Angeles fires, and this summer's record-setting heat wave across Europe, as reported by multiple European meteorological agencies.

Separately, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates published a nearly 6,000-word essay on his personal website on August 26 titled "The turbulent AI era is here." In it, Gates named customer support, software engineering, and paralegal work as the jobs most likely to be affected first, with construction and hospitality following by the end of the decade. He wrote that the world's institutions are not adequately prepared for the transition, and that ensuring AI becomes a force for good rather than harm should be a top priority. Gates also warned that AI systems are approaching or crossing important risk thresholds involving cybersecurity, biosecurity and social wellbeing. AI data centers have separately drawn scrutiny in several drought-affected Western states, where municipalities including Chandler and Marana, Arizona, have imposed new water-use restrictions on the facilities, according to reporting from Grist and Energy Platform News.
