USSPACECOM hosts third wargame series focused on maneuver warfare in the space domain

U.S. Space Command held its third APOLLO INSIGHT Commercial Integration Wargame exercise on September 23, 2026.

The third of four Commercial Integration tabletop exercises (TTX) focused on diversified orbits and included multiple scenarios and goals. Participants collaborated on shared strategies, improved their communication, and generated innovative ideas for future commercial capabilities.

“Our first two Commercial Integration Wargame TTXs generated high interest from across the DoW [Department of War] and industry partners. We’ve received positive responses for this third TTX, and we welcome the collaboration with commercial partners to find resilient and diversified solutions that address command priorities,” Cmdr. Heather Thomas, Commercial Integration Branch Chief for USSPACECOM’s Capability and Resource Integration directorate said prior to the event. “For this upcoming exercise we currently have 217 participants registered representing 87 different companies, including 24 new additions since our first and second events. Thanks to the great participation and collaboration during the first two exercises, we’ve been able to set a very high bar, and I expect that as we continue the commercial integration in exercises into 2027, interest will continue to increase."

Retired Brig. Gen. Bruce McClintock, RAND senior policy researcher and Space Enterprise Initiative lead, who was the moderator for this third TTX, said he was impressed by USSPACECOM’s commitment to information sharing and integration capabilities into campaigning and operations.

“The United States is stronger when it works closely with allies, partners and commercial providers,” said McClintock. “SPACECOM’s commitment to increased integration through these TTX events reflects a tangible effort to grow those important relationships and strengthen a broader coalition of allies, partners, and commercial providers.”

He added, “TTX #3 was noteworthy for the detailed discussion and information sharing among participants developing non-Keplerian space capabilities, further diversifying the orbits used for a wide range of activities. I was encouraged that a variety of commercial partners are making important advances in vLEO [Very Low Earth Orbit] and cislunar capabilities. The problem sets examined during APOLLO INSIGHT could be tested through combined maneuvers to further develop TTPs [Tactics, Techniques and Procedures] across the space enterprise.”

During an appearance Fed Gov Today on August 30, 2026, Gen. Stephen Whiting, USSPACECOM commander, emphasized the need to integrate with not only the United States’ allies and partners, but with commercial industry companies as well.

“Space is just so vast that we can’t do it all alone inside our own command. No single country, no single service, no single agency, no single company can do all the things we have to do in space to be successful. When we think of integration, we’re thinking about how to partner with different stakeholders,” Whiting said. “The U.S. commercial space industry is a massive advantage for our nation, and we’ve got to be able to leverage their cost curves and their innovation points.”

He added that there is an urgent need to integrate allied and commercial capabilities, deepen partnerships with industry for space domain awareness, and harness AI and machine learning to outpace adversaries in closing surveillance gaps.

Thomas added that they are planning the fourth and final TTX of the year, scheduled for December 16th at the Aerospace Corporation, adding that they have been a great host for each of these APOLLO INSIGHT events this year.

The first and second TTXs in the series were held in Colorado Springs, Colorado on March 23 and June 24, 2026, and centered on the threat of weapons of mass destruction in space and maneuver warfare respectively.
